April 25, 2018 (Press Release) -- Nashville-based singer-songwriter Charlie Smyth has announced his debut solo LP The Way I Feel, which is slated for a July 13 release. Smyth also shared the album's first single "Beautiful Noise" at PopMatters, which praised the track as "rich and vibrant" and a "rollicking world of sound." A veteran of the ’90s Chicago & Seattle punk scenes, Charlie Smyth’s sound has evolved over time, meandering like a tattered feather on the Southern breeze and settling somewhere beneath the ever-widening shadow of modern Americana. Grand, loose and vibrant, the Nashville-based troubadour’s new solo debut, The Way I Feel, is dusted with strings, mariachi horns and wistful blankets of steel guitar, its loose-lugnut drums propelling the whole beautiful jalopy of a record forward as if the wheels could come off at any minute. The record is a breathtaking statement of creative purpose, imbuing its too-often safe and by-the-numbers genre with an undeniable sense of musical adventure.

Austin singer-songwriter Christina Cavazos was just 16 when she released her first EP, About You. She followed it up a year later with Cold, an alluring collection that drew high praise from the Austin American-Statesman's Peter Blackstock, who called Cavazos “not just a future name to watch, but a captivating singer-songwriter who has already arrived.” This coming May, Cavazos will release her new EP, Mile Marker, an all original, six-song project, produced by Charlie Magnone, that finds Cavazos confidently carving out territory as a young adult who is about to embrace her future.

Cavazos relays the story behind the song, "I wrote "Forever" in the backseat of my car in the middle of April 2017. It was one of those moments where the melody came to me pretty instantly and there was nowhere else I could go. I had met someone that I was just 100% sure I was going to spend the rest of my life with. In reality, I think I stopped talking to that person maybe about a month after I wrote this song. But that idea of finding something that feels like it could last ‘forever' was the driving force behind this song and a couple other songs on Mile Marker."

Pride, who made his Opry debut in 1967, is scheduled to perform extended Opry sets in celebration of his milestone anniversary on both nights.
As part of the celebration, Opry flagship station 650 AM WSM (wsmonline.com) plans to salute the award-winning artist with a “Country Pride Weekend”, spinning Pride’s 50-plus Top 10 singles, playing signature Pride archived programs, and taking listener requests for the Country Music Hall of Famer’s all-time favorites.  The Band of Heathens made a giant leap with their last full length album Duende. New York, NY (April 24, 2018) – Adam Masterson is a British songwriter and his new album, Delayed Fuse, is a lesson in happy accidents, persistence and what magic can happen when you pair a great songwriter with a who’s who of top British studio musicians. An album that’d feel right at home nestled next to your Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits vinyl, Delayed Fuse is set for release on June 22 via CEN/The Orchard. The debut track from the album is "Runaway" and the video tells the tale of an ex-champion boxer trying to redeem himself. “I had this idea about this guy who had taken some metaphorical punches in life and wanted to come back,”says Masterson of the track. “I put in some snippets of my own emotional life. Musically, it’s happy go lucky, but with a dark undercurrent.” The video was directed by Masterson’s wife Anna Gabriel (daughter of Peter) and shot on location in New York’s Tompkins Square Park, at the Horseshoe Bar, Bar Chord in Ditmas Park and in John’s Boxing Gym in the Bronx. “On this record, I had good instincts and the good fortune to surround myself with great musicians,” says Masterson. LOS ANGELES, Calif. — I See Hawks in L.A.soared relatively trouble free for the first decade of their existence, but in 2018 they’re emerging from a string of confrontations with mortality, life choices, and the slow leakage of youthful possibility. It’s been almost 17 years since the release of their eponymous debut — on September 11, 2001. They didn’t get rich, they didn’t get famous, and yet they’re still here, perhaps benefitting artistically from the rocky passage. The rich flavor of battered soul. It’s clear these Hawks are in it for the music, for each other, and for the adventure of it all. Live and Never Learn is the first new Hawks album since 2013’s Mystery Drug. It’s been five hard years. In March of 2015, member Rob Waller lost his mother suddenly to pancreatic cancer, and Paul Lacques lost both his parents this past year. Most of the songs on Live and Never Learn were written and recorded while they were dealing with these primal griefs, as well as other personal battles dire but with better outcomes. Once again you teamed up with producer Greg Hunt at Rosewood Studios and once again, you guys hit it out of the park. How did this particular group of songs come together for you? I really enjoyed working with Greg and all those guys again. We work well together, and I definitely think we made magic this time. With these songs, there was a wide range of collaborations. I wrote three [on the record] with Wyatt McCubbin and the songs I didn’t have a hand in writing, I handpicked after thorough listens. We got a hold of some very good material and had the opportunity to collaborate with Terry McBryde, Brett James, and Jim and Brett Beavers. And while some of the songs might be a little outside of my box, they show what I can do as an artist, and honestly, I think this is, by far, the best project I have worked on so far. Many of the songs that have signature Josh Ward sound listeners love, so in what regards are some of them out of the box for you? People say Josh Ward is traditional country and yes, we carry one of best steel players in Texas with us, which makes us more traditional than others, but my sound is almost a neo-country thing now. It’s not your grandma and grandpa’s country music, and I don’t mean to sound ugly when I say that, it just has this new vibe where it injects a lot of 80’s and 90’s country, which I think is the heyday of country music. The songs have a roller coaster of emotions from the beer drinking, honky-tonk tunes to the anthems to the sexy stuff, to the rip your heart out sad ballads. They do take you on an enjoyable ride. With the tunes you did have a hand in, did you travel to Nashville to write? I flew to Columbus [Ohio] to Wyatt’s parent's place in Selma and we had what was probably the most relaxed writing session ever. The cabin had this old pot belly stove and we’d get up, look out the window and the snow would be three feet high. There were no distractions, and nothing was forced. If we wanted to write a song we did, and if we wanted to drink whiskey we did. We didn’t try to think of a subject or pick a feeling, we just said ‘Let’s reach down into our soul and just write.’ And I can tell you, we came out of it with some good songs: “One More Shot of Whiskey,” “More Than I Deserved,” and “A Cowboy Can.” I think every writing sessions should be that way. A very relaxed and fruitful session! The album’s opener, and first single, “All About Lovin’” is already climbing the Texas charts. It’s an incredibly fun, upbeat track which is a perfect way to kick off and introduce people to the album. Is there any reason you placed that song first? I know some people tie songs into one another and make a story type of deal, but for me, if a song sticks, it sticks. We kick off our live shows with “All About Lovin’”; and talk about an opener, ripping those guitars, that cowbell, and the Vibraslap…man, it’s a fun one! I felt it deserved to be out there in front and as our first single. Fun fact: Ward says, “The Vibraslap is the deal in the background that sounds like a rattlesnake. Nate Coon [Aaron Watson] played drums on the record and throughout the day he jokingly added that to every song and we were like, ‘Nope, ain’t working’ (laughing), but he hit the Vibraslap on this one and it stuck.” It’s so fun to listen to, I can only imagine how it comes across live. Have you been playing songs from the record at your shows? We’re doing three out of the eleven, little sneak peeks. And the neat thing is we’ll play a new song they haven’t heard, and you can tell they like it and want to sing along, but they don’t yet know the words (laughing). Then, all of a sudden, the second chorus comes along and they’re right there singing along. It’s great to see they’re going over so well. |
