Gig Alert: Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs at Mercury Lounge 10/27

“I think that it’s the jewel in our crown,” Holly Golightly says of Coulda Shoulda Woulda, (out Octber 16th) the eighth Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs album, "When you do something for a really long time, it stands to reason that you’re gonna become more proficient at it.”

Anyone who’s followed the artist during her career knows that she’s not prone to braggadocio or self-promotion. So when she expresses enthusiasm about her own work, one tends to pay attention.

Over the course of a career that spans over 25 years and more than 35 albums, the English singer-guitarist has established a niche as one of rock ’n’ roll’s fiercest iconoclasts. Having built a powerful and influential body of U.K.-based work that established her as an indie/D.I.Y. icon, she relocated to a farm in rural Georgia to establish a new creative identity as half of Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs, a duo with Texas-bred multi-instrumentalist and sometime vocalist Lawyer Dave. Over the course of six albums, the pair has carved out a catalog of Americana, drawing from country, blues, folk, gospel ands rockabilly influences to create music that’s deeply personal and accessible.

Supporting their brand-new album on Transdreamer Records as well as Golightly’s new solo album Slowtown Now! on the legendary English indie imprint Damaged Goods, Holly Golightly and The Brokeoffs will be in the Big Apple playing Mercury Lounge on October 27th.

Town Mountain to Release Renditions of Two Grateful Dead Tunes

To Honor the Grateful Dead in the year of the band’s 50th Anniversary
Town Mountain recorded bluegrass versions of two of their favorite Grateful Dead songs

Features "Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo" & "Big River"
Due Out Fri, Nov 13th

"Wow, I like these hard-core acoustic honky-tonk takes on two Grateful Dead favorites!" --David Gans, musician and co-author of This Is All a Dream We Dreamed: An Oral History of the Grateful Dead.”

ASHEVILLE, NC -- Town Mountain is excited to announce the independent release of Town Mountain: The Dead Session on Friday, November 13, 2015. “Each member of this band has enjoyed the music of the Grateful Dead for quite some time,” says vocalist and guitarist Robert Greer. “It seemed only fitting for Town Mountain to pay respect to some musical heroes in this year, their 50th year of existence.” They recorded an impromptu set of two of their favorite songs from the Grateful Dead’s catalog, “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” and “Big River” at the widely acclaimed Echo Mountain Recording Studios in their hometown of Asheville, NC.

This is the Grateful Dead done in Town Mountain’s hard drivin’ style filled with a honky tonk edge and barroom swagger. The resulting sound is touched by Jerry Garcia with Jimmy Martin and John Hartford… Fitting since Hartford played a short stint in Old and In The Way before Vassar Clements filled out the band on fiddle, and Garcia’s first instrument was a banjo as he was influenced by bluegrass music throughout his career. Narrowing down to just two was not an easy task for Town Mountain.

“What can I say about “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo”? It's just perfect. Lyrically it's amazing,” says banjoist Jesse Langlais. “Robert Hunter can be so descriptive yet so vague in the point he's trying to get across. Which is great for the audience because it allows listeners to choose what they want the song to be about. In my opinion that's what a good songwriter does. He leaves the song open to interpretation.”

(NASHVILLE, TN – October 12, 2015) – Stoney Creek Records guitar chanteuse Lindsay Ell recently raised thousands of dollars for charity over the course of just 24 hours while performing on Nashville’s famed Lower Broadway in celebration of her new single “By The Way.”

Presented by CMT Next Women of Country, Ell’s 24-hour “Busking on Broadway” event raised several thousand dollars in tips for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Ell braved torrents of rain and cold temperatures throughout the event brought to Middle Tennessee by Hurricane Joaquin. With her gear wrapped in plastic, her set list destroyed by rain and her feet engulfed in puddles, Ell embodied the oft-used industry catchphrase of ‘The Show Must Go On.’

A plethora of famous faces joined Ell to perform and show their support during the marathon concert, including Craig Campbell, Brooke Eden, Ashley Gearing, Kristen Kelly, The Raging Idiots (AKA Bobby Bones and Eddie), Lucie Silvas, Chuck Wicks, Charlie Worsham and many more. Check out a photo gallery of the event at CMT.com

“I cannot thank everyone enough for their support in helping make this 24-hour concert a success. I couldn't have done it without the generosity of CMT, the Opry, all of my incredible guests, and the overwhelming response of everyone who came down to Broadway to cheer us on or who watched on Periscope. We were able to raise thousands of dollars for the kids because of all of you,” said Ell.

Ell’s new single “By the Way” shot into the Top 10 at iTunes Country upon its release last Friday. “By the Way” officially impacts Country Radio on October 19th and is available at all digital retailers now. Buy it here: http://geni.us/bytheway

Ell will visit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt later this month to perform for and visit patients and officially present raised monies to the facility, a part of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and a partner of CMT’s charitable arm, CMT One Country.

Mississippi Bluesman Leo "Bud" Welch with SIX NY/NJ Appearances

10/12/2015

Picture
BRUCE, Miss. — At age 82, bluesman Leo “Bud” Welch rocks on stage like a teenager — dancing and spinning as he beats out jagged chords and grimy solos on his pink, sparkle-covered guitar. That raw youthful energy and Welch’s old-school juke-joint jones blend full-throttle in the 10 songs on I Don’t Prefer No Blues, his second release for Fat Possum Records’ subsidiary Big Legal Mess. The album is a garage-blues manifesto that weds waves of prickly six-string distortion and gutbucket drums with Welch’s smoke-and-ash voice and mud-crusted guitar — and lives up to Fat Possum’s history of producing edgy but deeply rooted recordings by artists like Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside.

I Don’t Prefer No Blues, released on March 24, 2015 is the follow-up to last year’s Sabougla Voices, an all-gospel disc that marked Welch’s debut as both a recording artist and a songwriter. That album was heralded as a fresh breath of rust-bearing air — a throwback to an era of rural music free from outside influences and a reminder that blues-fueled primitivism is still personified by a handful of living Southern artists.

Local friends, Welch will be in the tri-state area for numerous dates at the end of October. For more informaiton click any of the links below.
