Evering Release "Have No Fear"

The inheritance of an old piano sparked new Scottish act Evering’s first collaboration. From this inception, the duo of Chris Yendell and Dawn Coulshed have created a sound which is also brimming with inheritance from their varied influences, including Scottish traditional Highlands music, Elbow, Jeff Buckley and Led Zeppelin, yet have kindled something that is their own.

Yendell’s vocals are raw, emotive and rich in experiences which pulls the listener into Coulshed’s intricate piano work and the acoustic backdrop. The result is something very special with a timeless feel which is hard to come by. It’s a water-colour of styles, focusing on the mood and engagement which creates cinema in the story telling in a simple yet moving way.

Evering’s debut self-released EP Running Circles received plays from BBC Introducing and Radio X’s Dave Rowntree. New single "Have No Fear" bursts with beauty and sentiment conjuring longing for freedom yet it is celebratory in its resolution. This duo want to take you on a journey with a reflective yet ‘seize the day’ motive, so have no fear in joining them. Watch the video for "Have No Fear" here.

Jerry Castle's 'Not So Soft Landing' Releases June 24th

Nashville singer-songwriter Jerry Castle is set to release his new album Not So Soft Landing June 24th. The 10-song set was recorded in East Nashville and Topanga, CA and was produced by the Grammy Award-winning producer Chad Brown (Ryan Adams, Hayes Carll) and mixed by 3-time Grammy-winning engineer and producer Warren Riker (Wyclef Jean, Down, Common).  PopMatters premiered the brand new video for “She Kills” last week and can be seen HERE. The clip was directed by Stacie Huckeba, who also directed the video for the album’s first single “Ride,” which can be seen HERE.

While his previous albums presented an Americana troubadour writing songs about hard living, heartbreak and desperately trying to turn things around, the songs found on Not So Soft Landing are a marked departure from his previous rootsy sound.  A much more ethereal, atmospheric, and at times psychedelic effort, Jerry credits much of his recent inspiration to time spent in sensory deprivation float tanks.  Castle says, “I started floating simply as a means of trying to improve my meditation technique, not to change my songwriting.  When you float, it’s easier to go into the theta state, which is the meditative state.”  He adds, “It’s like floating in outer space and there really is nothing like it.  The more I floated, the more it made me feel like I was more connected to the cosmos.  It definitely has opened me up as a songwriter and gave me a whole set of senses to observe and then use in my creative process.”

Castle continues “Not So Soft Landing is the first album I’ve done that didn’t feel forced at any point of the writing or recording process.  As a result, I feel like my sound has evolved into a different sort of animal than my previous albums.  The time I spent trying to write songs for country hits really messed with my head and the authenticity of what I do.  I feel like I basically spent the previous three albums working that influence out of my system and this album represents taking a big step forward in arriving at a much truer version of myself.”

Colin Hay Announces FOUR NYC Dates in July

Though Colin Hay made an indelible mark on pop music back in the ‘80s, he’s been far from idle in the years since his unmistakable tenor and witty songs sent Australian band Men at Work to the top of the charts. His second-chapter career includes 12 solo albums (his latest, Next Year People, was released in February on Compass Records) and a variety of acting gigs; multiple appearances in the TV show Scrubs alone endeared him to a new generation of fans.

Of course, he’s kept his nose to the touring grindstone, too, organically growing his audience the old-fashioned way — by putting on the kinds of shows people tell their friends about. Following the success of his Last Summer on Earth outing with Barenaked Ladies and Violent Femmes this past summer, Hay is embarking on a solo excursion across the Midwest and Northeast where he’ll showcase tracks from the new release, which Rhythms magazine called “his latest admirable installment,” adding, “there is more than enough to confirm that he has lost none of his ability to craft openhearted songs with insightful lyrics and catchy melodies.”

Hay will be in NYC at City Winery for FOUR nights this July. They include:

Monday, July 11
Tuesday, July 12
Sunday, July 24
Monday, July 25

Showtime: 8 p.m.
Tickets: $45-$65

The Heaters, L.A. New Wave Best-Kept-Secret, to Release 1983 Recordings on Omnivore

STUDIO CITY, Calif. (Press Release) — The Heaters were one of L.A.’s hottest live acts in the late ’70s, opening for heavyweights like Talking Heads, Van Halen, and Cheap Trick. The band’s explosive stage technique, visual smarts, great pop songwriting, and Mercy Bermudez’s soaring lead vocals — the sound of Phil Spector mixed with the energy of punk — made them the band to see on the Sunset Strip. Sadly, their debut album (one of the most highly anticipated releases of the day) was plagued with problems and captured none of their magic. It was a commercial failure, with little exposure in radio and no sales. A second album “sounded” better, but met the same fate.

Track Premiere: Dolly Shine "Closing Time"

Stephenville, Texas’s Dolly Shine will release their latest album, Walkabout on June 17th. Visualized as a concept album, the project is a wanderer’s diary of nine well-crafted tales dealing with relationships, murder, desolation, and lonesomeness. TDC is thrilled to premiere one of the project's tracks, "Closing Time."

Brimming with that signature fiddle and a melody that immediately catches your ear, the tune, written by Taylor Davis, is an unapologetically frank refusal to take a lover back - “I love you woman, but I hate you/And I can’t live with your new way of life/Can’t find a reason to believe you/You never leave alone at closing time” - that includes a little wink and nod at the three minute mark.
